WHAT ARE DENTAL VENEERS?
Dental veneers are thin shells made from porcelain or resin that are bonded over the top of your own teeth. The bonding process requires the removal of a small amount of enamel from your teeth so that the veneers fit properly and look natural. Because of the need to remove enamel, once you have had veneers placed, the process is not reversible. Veneers usually last on average about ten to fifteen years, but with excellent oral hygiene, they may last even longer.
PLACING DENTAL VENEERS
Having dental veneers placed requires a few appointments. At the first appointment, we will examine your teeth and your overall oral health to determine whether you are a good candidate for veneers. If so, we will begin the process by preparing the teeth. We will then either do a 3D scan of the area or make traditional impressions, or molds, of your teeth and measurements to send to the dental lab that will be creating the veneers. We will place temporary veneers in the meantime for your comfort and esthetics.
When your veneers have returned from the dental lab, you can return to our office, and we will begin the process of bonding them to your teeth. First, we will clean and polish your teeth, and then we will etch them to create a surface that the bonding cement can cling to. We will check the fit of each veneer and do any shaping or trimming work necessary. We will only bond the veneers to your teeth when they are perfect. As each veneer is bonded to your teeth, the bonding cement is cured with a special light.
We will finish by again checking the fit of the veneers and making any adjustments or corrections. We may schedule a follow-up appointment to check on how your veneers feel and make sure everything is going smoothly.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR VENEERS?
The best candidates for dental veneers have a strong commitment to good oral hygiene habits and have healthy teeth that are free from decay and gum disease. If you grind or clench your teeth, dental veneers might not be right for you. While the veneers are strong and durable, the pressure created from grinding and clenching could cause damage to them. We will review your health history and help you decide whether veneers are right for you. If you are not a good candidate for veneers, don’t despair; other procedures are available that will still give you the healthy, beautiful teeth you want.
