Teeth can become cracked, worn down or become no longer structurally sound because of extensive fillings, grinding, decay or eating hard foods. A crown can help save your tooth! A dental crown fits over the tooth to both protect the tooth and allow it to better blend in with the rest of your teeth. Crowns may also be used to cover dental implants, which may sometimes replace a missing tooth.

At Troup Family Dental, we offer porcelain crowns, no-metal zirconia crowns and gold crowns. Not only are these materials strong and long-lasting, they also allow your crowns to fit in with your own natural teeth. When you smile wide or laugh, you won’t have to worry about people noticing your crowns.

CROWNS

We can fit you for new crowns or replace existing crowns that have become damaged or fallen off. To schedule an appointment with Dr. May to discuss your need for crowns and find out which type of crown is right for you, call Troup Family Dental today!

PLACING CROWNS

Most crown placement requires two visits. At the first visit, we will do a complete examination, which may include x-rays, to check your overall oral health and make sure that a crown is right for you. In some cases, saving the tooth may not be the best option. If this is the case, we will discuss your options with you and create a treatment plan that will meet your individual needs.

In order for the crowns to fit over your teeth, it is necessary to shape the tooth to allow room for the crown. This process is very easy and usually just requires local anesthesia. Once this part is complete, we will either do a 3D scan of the area or a traditional impression, or mold, of your tooth to send to the dental lab that will be creating your crowns. We will place a temporary crown over the tooth to allow you to continue to function normally, reduce sensitivity and improve your comfort.

Your crown should be back from the lab in about two to three weeks. At that time, you will return to our office to have the crown placed. We will fit the crown onto your tooth and check the fit and size to make sure that everything is correct. When you are happy with the fit and looks of the crown, we will cement the crown into place. If at any time the crown feels uncomfortable or if it feels like your bite has changed, please call our office so that we can get you in quickly.
